Sour Cream Pancakes

Have you ever eaten a pancake made with sour cream? There’s a little breakfast/lunch spot in Salt Lake called Penny Ann’s Cafe, and they serve the most delicious Sour Cream Pancakes! Sometimes, I daydream about those pancakes.

Sour Cream Pancakes

They’re that good.

Saturday morning, I was thinking about those light, slightly tangy, melt in your mouth cakes. I was getting ready to watch General Conference on TV, and didn’t have time to run in to SLC and wait in line for pancakes, so instead, I dug up a recipe I’ve had for years. A few minutes later, we were flipping cakes and smothering them with butter, syrup and fresh strawberries.
I know you’re going to love these too.
Happy cooking!

Author abountifulkitchen

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • additional butter for griddle

Instructions

  1. Combine all wet ingredients in a medium size bowl.
  2. Mix with whisk until blended.
  3. Add all of the dry ingredients to the bowl.
  4. Mix once with a large spoon or whisk, do not over mix, mix just until the ingredients are incorporated, there should be a few lumps in the batter.
  5. Heat the griddle to about 350 degrees. Melt butter onto griddle.
  6. Using a 1/3 cup measure, scoop out batter and spread a bit with the edge of the cup. The pancake should be approximately 4-5 inches across.
  7. Let the pancake cook until several bubbles appear and then pop. Turn the pancake gently, and let cook for an additional 3 minutes on opposite side.
  8. Do not pat down. Do not flip more than once.
  9. The pancake is done when poked gently in the middle and the cake springs back.
  10. Serve immediately with fresh fruit and syrup.

  1. This is almost like the recipe I have for sour cream pancakes and they are so delicious!
Yours look way better then mine though. YUM!

  2. Okay I have to try this! It sounds so good! Your pancakes are beautiful by the way. Mine always end up looking like misshapen blobs 🙂

    1. You'll love these Karen. Use the measuring cup to shape the cakes. The batter is very thick and easy to manipulate. Mine are never perfect, but this recipe does not spread a lot, so the batter is not all over the place!

  3. We made these this morning with half white/half whole wheat flour. They were the best pancakes ever–even better than Penny Ann's. Thank you!!

  4. LOVE Penny Ann’s pancakes! Except they just use a bag of Krusteez!! They add the other stuff to the mix but they sure are delicious. I’m going to give this recipe a try. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hands down the best pancakes ever! Have been making these every weekend since I discovered this recipe. Thank you for sharing.

Si, these are amazing and I don’t make any other pancakes now! We were in charge of breakfast for a weekend at a cabin with a few other families, so we tripled the recipe and everyone raved about them.

Best pancakes ever!!!! I grew up in a house where our syrup was homemade and any store bought stuff was just not satisfying. Well these go well with our scratch made syrup. The best !!!

    1. Oh my, that syrup sounds yummy Adam! There’s nothing like homemade pancakes and syrup. Thanks for your comment,

These pancakes are, without question, the BEST pancakes I’ve ever made or eaten! I love, love, love them! I have made them for my family, at girls’ camp, at family reunions–they are always the stars of the show! I will never use another recipe.

Once you have combined all the ingredients, you may have to add a little additional water to get the consistency you want. You will LOVE the result! Best pancakes EVER! 🙂

    Thanks, Si!

    1. You’re welcome, Kirsten! They’re the perfect pancake to make for a large group, and the texture is what makes them so delicious. Thanks for sharing,

Love these pancakes! We’ve made them more than a dozen times and they’re SO yummy! My husband and daughter love to add mini chocolate chips!

We love this recipe (and Penny Ann’s)! However, we can’t ever seem to get the middle to cook thouroughly. I’ve tried lots of different things, like turning down the heat and letting them cook longer, etc… but most of the time we get doughy centers.
We like them so much that we just eat around the center, but I’d like to cook them all the way through.
    Suggestions?
I’m going to try adding water next time (as suggested in the comments) I make them to see if having the dough be less thick will help.
    Yummy recipe! Thanks!

    1. Hi Vickey,
The temperature of the griddle should be about 350 degrees. I should add a little water if you are getting an uncooked center. Try about 1/4 cup. Hope this helps!

These are a constant request from family! We love to pair these pancakes with the buttermilk syrup recipe from the abk waffle recipe. We top it with fresh fruit and it’s so unbelievably good. Drool worthy.

These are truly the best pancakes ever! After eating at Penny Ann’s Cafe in Salt Lake City, I was on the search for a pancake as good as theirs. ABK never disappoints! I have passed the link for this recipe on to several family members and it keeps getting recommended. My brother who lives in PA mentioned it the other day it’s become so popular with his co workers as the best pancake they’ve ever had! Buttermilk and sour cream will be staples in your fridge for these!

Great recipe. I added some orange zest, and also semi sweet chocolate chips to a few pancakes. The recipe turned out great and is a keeper. Will try it with whole wheat next time.
    Thank you!

    1. I love that idea of adding orange zest and choc chips, Audrey! So glad you enjoyed the recipe and thank you for sharing!

  15. We had these for breakfast for dinner at the end of a long week. They were a perfect surprise! I didn’t have quite enough sour cream, so I used a bit of green yogurt too. Delicious! Thank you!

Penny Ann’s is by far our favorite breakfast spot. These pancakes are just like theirs – we substitute whole Greek yogurt for the sour cream to get some extra protein. But these are the best pancakes!!

These are hands down the best pancakes ever! I’ve made these several times for different people and everyone is always amazed how good they are and want the recipe. Thank you so, SO much for this recipe because it’s always fun seeing how much people love them and they really are incredibly delicious.

    1. Jaclyn,
You’re so sweet to send such a kind response! I am so glad that the pancakes turned out delicious. Sometimes pancakes can turn out flat and dry but the sour cream adds incredible moisture!
      Have a great day,
