Steel cut oats traditionally take a long time to cook and require a lot of attention while on the stovetop, but this recipe for Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats takes the hassle out of cooking this delicious and healthy breakfast!
If you’re familiar with steel cut oats, you know the cooking process often scares people away. Steel cut oats take longer (a lot longer) to cook than regular rolled oats. Steel cut oats won’t absorb liquid like rolled oats, so cooking traditionally requires standing at the stove, stirring and making sure the oats are heated enough to cook, but don’t stick to the bottom of the pan and burn. Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats and Grains are a game changer!

I have to admit, I was a bit tentative cooking steel cut oats in the Instant Pot…but now, I’m a believer. This recipe is (by far), the most simple recipe I have made in the Instant Pot to date! Throw the oats into the pot with a few other ingredients and walk away. It’s that easy. You heard it here first, this is a no-fail Instant Pot steel cut oats recipe. I love to eat Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats and Grains with chopped fruit- apples being my favorite. I love the crunch of the apples with cooked oats. I never peel apples, just give a good washing and leave the peel on. If you’re trying to cut sugar in your diet, you can leave out the maple syrup, but I love the maple flavor and the amount of sugar is just right to sweeten the oatmeal. You can also use brown sugar as a topping and leave out the maple syrup if you like!
I shopped at Trader Joe’s on the day we shot this recipe post, and purchase all of the ingredients there, including fresh fruit and the unsweetened coconut. You can make your own granola, or purchase granola to simplify. I love setting up an oatmeal bar with fresh fruit and toppings, along with muffins and these Croissant Breakfast Cups.
A little sweet, a bit of savory and a lot of fresh mouth watering choices. This breakfast is perfect for the holidays. Plug in the oats when you gather to open gifts. By the time you’re finished, breakfast will be ready. Happy holidays my friends!

- 3 cups water
- 2 cups apple juice
- 1 cup steel cut oats
- 1 cup 10 grain cereal blend (Trader Joe's carries their own brand or you can use Bob's Red Mill)
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- ⅓-1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1-2 cup milk or half and half (for mixing into individual bowls after cooked)
- toppings: chopped apples, golden raisins, coconut, walnuts or pecans, pumpkin seeds, fresh raspberries, fresh blueberries, bananas, granola, etc.
- Place water, apple juice, steel cut oats, 10 grain cereal, salt and cinnamon into the bowl of an Instant Pot and give the ingredients a good stir.
- Make sure the sealing ring is in place inside of the lid. Close the lid and make sure the steam release dial is turned to "seal" position.
- If your Instant Pot has a "Porridge" setting turn it on and adjust the time to 10 minutes. If there is not a porridge setting, simply turn the setting to "High Pressure" and use the arrow to set the time for 10 minutes.
- After the timer goes off to signal the oatmeal is cooked, wait an additional 15 minutes to allow the pressure in the pot to naturally release.
- Carefully place the steam vent to the venting position to allow any remaining steam to escape.
- You may release the lid when all pressure is released.
- Stir in desired amount of pure maple syrup.
- Place cooked oats into a serving bowl or serve right out of Instant Pot.
- Serve with half and half or milk and topping bar.
- Leftover cooked oats may be stored in refrigerator and heated up in cereal bowl as needed.
